3G
3G stands for Third Generation Cellular Technology. This promises world
wide mobile coverage and data speeds typical to that of Internet Broadband
on Personal Computers.
Due to be implemented from 2001 onwards and will also feature video calls/conferencing
and streaming and much more.
Bluetooth
Bluetooth is a low cost chip that can connect mobiles to mobiles, mobiles
to computer and almost any electronic device with Bluetooth capabilities.
Specifically useful on mobile phones, you can transfer data such as files
to each others mobile within a 10 metre radius very quick with no limits
to file size issues (unless your handset has restricted memory storage).
EMS
Is an extension to SMS. Text can be formatted to fonts etc, animations,
pictures, icons, sound effects and special ring tones.
If a phone who is sent an EMS is not compatible then the message is displayed
as a plain SMS.
GPRS
GPRS stands for General Packet Radio Service. An extension to GSM, GPRS
is 2.5G technology and it speeds up connection speeds up to 115kbps. Usually
used for MMS and WAP browsing on mobile handsets.
GSM
GSM stands for Global System for Mobile Communications also known as
Second Generation technology (2G).
Released in 1991 in Europe has become an instant success featuring in
over 100 countries throughout Europe, Asia and North America.
Java
Is a object orientated computer programming language developed by Sun
Microsystems.
Java is well suited for the world wide web and mobile phones due to it
relatively small file sizes it produces after you have compiled the program.
MMS
MMS stands for Multimedia Message. It can do everything SMS can do but
you can send images and sound in them. You can send emails using MMS as
well.
Monophonic
Monophonic is a old type of ringtone that is played on mobile phones
when it has a incoming call.
Basic in the way it is made and the playing quality reflects this compared
to Polyphonic ringtones.
MP3
Is a compressed sound file which is ideal for downloading off the web.
It usually has the file extension .mp3.
Some mobile phones can play these files. Actual songs not just the tune
can be played. Its best to use bluetooth to transfer songs from mobiles
to another.
NMT
NMT stands for Nordic Mobile Telephone. It is a 1G (analogue) telephone
system for the Nordic nations to communicate with before the introduction
of GSM (2G).
Polyphonic
Polyphonic is a type of ringtone. It can play multi layered electronic
music (piano and violin playing together). Its more advance than the monophonic
ringtone as monophonic can only play 'a beat'.
Not all polyphonic mobiles can play the same polyphonic ringtone. Same
can only play 4 polyphony level, or number of simultaneous voices, whilst
others can play 24.
Ringtones
Ringtones are sounds that are played when a mobile is taking an incoming
call. Ringtones are Polyphonic, Monophonic or Realtones.
SIM
SIM stands for Subscriber Identity Module. It is a chip that is placed
into the back of a mobile that stores subscribers address book and their
details. You need a SIM card so you can access a GSM network.
SMS
SMS stands for Short Messaging Service. It was developed as part of GSM
and is by far the most popular service GSM has to offer. It can send up
to 160 characters per message and is plain text.
